Fighting the sale of illegal cell phones in Brazil

Anatel - National Telecommunications Agency announced on Friday (21) measures to curb the sale of illegal cell phones in the country. With the significant increase in the sale of products without approval, the agency reinforces the mandatory approval process for cell phones and smartphones in Brazil.

The sale of these products without certification is illegal and poses risks to consumers, such as: battery overheating, unsafe levels of electromagnetic radiation and the possibility of installing malicious software, with improper access to users' personal data.

In an interview with TV Anhanguera, a Globo subsidiary in the state of Goiás, Kim Rieffel, CEO of Latin America and the Caribbean operations at PCN Latin America and vice-president of telecommunications at ABRAC - Brazilian Conformity Assessment Association, highlighted that effective inspection of marketplaces is crucial to mitigate the entry of these products that do not meet expected quality and safety standards.

Anatel's measure requires merchants to include the cell phone approval code in sales advertisements. This code must correspond to the Anatel database, under penalty of a fine of up to 200.000 BRL per day.
