Advances in the energy efficiency of LED lighting in Brazil over the last 10 years In the last 10 years, the energy efficiency of LED lighting in Brazil has experienced significant advances, driven by technological innovations and important regulations from Inmetro - National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology and Eletrobras. This progress has not only contributed to the reduction of energy consumption, but has also brought important economic and environmental benefits.
The evolution of LED bulbs began with improvements in materials and designs, allowing these bulbs to produce more light with less energy. Compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps, LEDs are significantly more efficient, providing energy savings of up to 80%. Furthermore, the durability of LED lamps has increased, with a useful life that can be up to 25 times longer than that of traditional lamps.
Regulations such as Inmetro Ordinances nº 062/2022 and 069/2022 were crucial to guarantee the quality and efficiency of Luminaires for Public Road Lighting and lamps respectively. The Brazilian PBE Labeling Program, led by Inmetro, has established rigorous criteria for the certification of LED lamps, promoting products that meet the highest performance and safety standards. The ENCE label (National Energy Conservation Label) has become a trusted reference for consumers when choosing efficient products.
The benefits of these advances are evident. According to data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy and Inmetro, the replacement of traditional lamps with LEDs contributed to a significant reduction in electricity consumption in the country. In 2022, 89% of lamps sold in Brazil were LEDs, and the expectation is that, by 2030, this number will reach 96% according to data from Euromonitor. This change not only relieves pressure on the national electricity system, but also contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, aligning with Brazil's environmental goals.
For consumers, the benefits go beyond saving on electricity bills. The longer lifespan of LED bulbs reduces the need for frequent replacements, providing a more cost-effective solution in the long term. For manufacturers, compliance with international standards facilitates entry into global markets, promoting competitiveness and innovation in the lighting sector.
At PCN Latin America, we are committed to supporting these advances through the certification of LED lamps and luminaires, ensuring that they meet established energy efficiency and safety standards. Our work helps promote a more sustainable and efficient lighting market, benefiting consumers, manufacturers and the environment.
