UN deepens discussions on AI governance with a focus on safety, equity, and social impact
The United Nations (UN), through the AIforGood initiative, has published the report from the Special Session on Artificial Intelligence Governance, held in July 2025. The document highlights the main multilateral consensuses on the challenges and opportunities related to the safe, ethical, and inclusive use of AI within the framework of the SustainableDevelopmentGoals (SDGs).
The meeting brought together Member States, international organizations, and civil society representatives, focusing on the creation of collaborative frameworks for monitoring, evaluation, and guidance of AI development on a global scale. The proposal moves toward consolidating a multilateral mechanism coordinated by the United Nations that respects national jurisdictions while promoting regulatory convergence and shared principles.
Among the topics discussed, the report highlights:
– The importance of inclusive public and regulatory infrastructures to support the safe use of AI;
– The need for transparency, auditability, and accountability mechanisms in sensitive applications;
– The role of conformity assessment and certification of AI systems to ensure safety, non-discrimination, and accountability.
