Recycling of Electric Vehicle Batteries Advances in the Brazilian Legislature

Bill PL 2,496/2024 was introduced in the Federal Senate, establishing the National Policy for Recycling Electric Vehicle Batteries. The proposal aims to structure a coordinated system of reverse logistics and reuse of critical materials, focusing on sustainability, safety, and technological development.

The initiative recognizes the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries in the country and the urgency of regulatory solutions to prevent environmental impacts and health risks arising from improper disposal.

PCN Latin America closely follows this topic, focusing on the quality infrastructure opportunities emerging from this agenda, such as technical requirements for the safe reuse of cells and modules, testing and certification for second life and recyclability, accreditation of laboratories and conformity assessment bodies, as well as regulatory harmonization with international standards.

Regulation of recycling is a key element to ensure circularity in the electromobility sector and strengthen the national production chain in the face of the energy transition.
