New International Publications Reinforce the Technical Evolution of Electric Vehicle Charging
Two recent international publications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) deserve the attention of companies operating in the electric vehicle charging sector, including manufacturers, importers, system integrators, charging infrastructure operators, laboratories, and organizations involved in conformity assessment.
IEC 62196-3:2026, published on April 23, 2026, addresses dimensional compatibility requirements for plugs, socket-outlets, vehicle connectors, vehicle inlets, and couplers used in conductive charging of electric vehicles with direct current (DC) and combined AC/DC interfaces. The new edition replaces the 2022 version and includes significant technical revisions, such as the integration of the content of IEC TS 62196-3-1 as a normative annex, increased ratings for all configurations, and references to new tests specified in IEC 62196-1:2025.
Also published was ISO/PAS 15118-23:2026, related to the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) communication interface. The publication establishes a conformity test plan for second-generation network and application layer requirements applicable to DC charging, covering Electric Vehicle Communication Controllers (EVCC) and Supply Equipment Communication Controllers (SECC) in accordance with ISO 15118-20 requirements.
These updates are relevant because the electric vehicle charging sector depends on the convergence of electrical safety, interoperability, vehicle-to-charger communication, connector compatibility, and verifiable charging system performance. In Brazil, these publications should be closely monitored, especially as charging infrastructure expands and technical and regulatory discussions advance regarding metering, safety, connectivity, and conformity assessment of systems and components used in charging stations.
PCN monitors technical and regulatory developments that impact the electric vehicle charging market, supporting companies in understanding applicable requirements and preparing for certification, testing, and conformity assessment processes.
