IEC updates battery safety standard

New IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) publication updates standard for battery safety and performance

The IEC has published edition 6.0 of the IEC 60086-4:2025 standard, which brings important updates to the requirements for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in electronic devices. This update improves the test guidelines and performance criteria, ensuring that batteries meet more stringent safety and reliability standards before reaching the market.

Among the main changes are new tests for resistance to extreme temperature and pressure conditions, greater control over the risks of leakage and explosion, and adjustments to the short-circuit and shock acceleration tests. The revision also incorporates more precise guidelines for manufacturers on labeling and identification of risks, facilitating the safe handling and disposal of these products, especially in high-energy consumption applications.

The update to IEC 60086-4:2025 reinforces the importance of conformity assessment to ensure that primary batteries containing lithium are manufactured and tested within international safety standards. These changes are essential to mitigate risks and improve the reliability of products used in electronic devices, medical equipment and industrial applications.
