Find out how water-resistant your phone really is

The water resistance of smartphones and other electronic devices is indicated by the IP (Ingress Protection) rating, defined by the IEC 60529 standard series, published by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission). This code indicates the level of protection of the equipment against the ingress of solid particles and liquids.

The IP code consists of two digits. The first indicates protection against dust and solid particles, while the second refers to protection against water. For example, a phone with an IP67 rating is fully protected against dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water, under the conditions defined by the standard. An IP68-rated device offers similar protection against dust, with greater resistance to immersion, as specified by the manufacturer.

The IEC clarifies that the tests associated with IP ratings are conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, which means that the indicated resistance does not equate to unrestricted use in any situation. Factors such as depth, exposure time, water pressure, temperature, and product wear may influence the actual performance of the device.

However, it is important to pay close attention, as smartphones available in Brazil typically start offering IP54 protection. Therefore, manufacturers are required to inform the IP rating to consumers, and the associated technical documentation is essential to understand the limits of water resistance and to avoid damage resulting from use outside the specified conditions.
