National legislature evaluates bill for collection and recycling of electronics
The Chamber of Deputies is evaluating bill 4094/24, which proposes the creation of the National Program for Collection, Recycling and Disposal of Electronic Equipment. The objective is to mitigate the environmental impacts resulting from the improper disposal of electronic devices, promoting sustainable practices throughout the country.
The program covers a variety of equipment, including: Mobile devices: cell phones, tablets and similar devices; Computers and peripherals: desktops, notebooks, printers, among others; Miscellaneous electronic devices: video game consoles, cameras, etc.
According to the proposal, manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers will be responsible for establishing collection points accessible to consumers, facilitating the return of obsolete or unusable electronics. In addition, these entities must implement reverse logistics systems to guarantee the safe transportation of collected equipment and ensure that it is destined for reuse, recycling or proper disposal, in accordance with current environmental legislation.
Brazil, as the largest producer of electronic waste in Latin America, generates around 2 million tons per year, much of which is not yet recycled properly. The program reinforces the country's commitment to environmental preservation and compliance with international agreements related to solid waste management, promoting the transition to a more sustainable economy.
The proposal also encourages partnerships between the government and the private sector to create specialized centers for recycling electronic products, responsible for sorting and reusing materials, strengthening the circular economy.
PCN Latin America's initiative with the Solid Waste Management Program (PGRS) offers a competitive advantage to companies seeking to implement appropriate waste disposal policies, ensuring that their practices are aligned with regulatory requirements and sustainability principles.
